"U.S. closes Mexico border crossing after shootout
TIJUANA, Mexico (Reuters) - U.S. authorities closed the world’s busiest land border crossing on Tuesday after a shootout between suspected Mexican human traffickers and U.S. agents, U.S. officials said.
"The port is closed and will remain closed for several hours," U.S. Customs and Border Patrol spokeswoman Angelica Decima said after the incident at the congested San Ysidro crossing between the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego.
The suspected smugglers shot across busy lines of traffic at U.S. agents when they tried to stop three vans packed with about 70 illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, the officials said.
The agents returned fire, and three people in the vans and a motorist were wounded, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mexico’s violent drug gangs are increasingly moving into the lucrative people-smuggling business, but tight U.S. border security is forcing them to take bigger risks to get narcotics and illegal immigrants into the United States.
Tuesday’s brazen attempt was unprecedented at the heavily guarded crossing where helicopters circle overhead and armed agents with dogs keep watch at a series of staggered checkpoints.
All the illegal immigrants were arrested and taken into custody and the crossing, a major smuggling corridor for narcotics and illegal immigrants, was shut while police carried out the investigation.
Some 90 million people a year use the California-Mexico land border crossings, with almost half the traffic going through San Ysidro alone.
Angry drivers started blaring car horns as a huge traffic jam built up on the Mexican side while U.S. agents signaled them to turn round.
"I’ve never known the entire crossing to be closed before. We just didn’t believe the agents when they told us to turn around," said a Mexican student who gave his name as Juan Carlos and who crosses the border almost daily.
U.S. officials are directing motorists to California’s other six border crossing, which also handle trucks.

"Mexico cartels kidnap, kill migrants headed to U.S.
TECATE, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico’s violent drug gangs are increasingly kidnapping illegal migrants for ransom and forcing them to carry narcotics into the United States as they muscle into the lucrative trade of smuggling people across the border.
Traffickers armed with automatic weapons are snatching weary Mexican and Central American migrants on both sides of the border and holding them in cramped houses with little water or food until families pay ransoms of up to $12,000.
The Mexican army and U.S. border officials say that those who cannot pay are killed, stripped and dumped in shallow graves in remote stretches of the desert frontier.
"My sons were tricked, tortured and then killed by the smugglers," said Esmeralda Guerrero outside the morgue in the barren town of Tecate across from California, where she came to identify the bodies of her two sons in their 20s last month.
"They kidnapped them and demanded $4,000 to keep them alive. It took me two days to send the money. They didn’t wait," said Guerrero, whose sons trekked up from Mexico City.
Tecate is one a route favored by smugglers for its remote terrain and proximity to San Diego, but migrant abductions are border-wide.
Mexican soldiers stormed a suburban house in the factory city of Reynosa across from Texas last month to rescue more than 120 kidnapped Central Americans who were huddled together and watched over by men with guns and baseball bats.
Despite the worst U.S. recession in decades, poor Latin Americans are still trying to cross illegally into the United States in search of higher wages than at home, walking for days through hot desert or swimming the Rio Grande.
Powerful drug cartels began taking over the trafficking of undocumented migrants into the United States at the start of the decade, seeking to make even bigger profits along their trafficking routes and pushing out small-time smugglers.
Tightened U.S. border security has boosted smuggling fees, and even without kidnap ransoms, immigrant smuggling generates $2 billion a year just in Arizona, U.S. officials say.
As rival gangs wage a lethal war over drug routes into the United States, cartels are kidnapping each others’ immigrants or turning on their own clients, using them to smuggle drugs.
"The kidnapping of migrants is happening in both Mexico and the United States … and it is on the rise," said Mexico’s consul-general in San Diego, Maria de los Remedios Gomez.
The Gulf cartel from northeastern Mexico and the Sinaloa gang from the Pacific coast are battling for control of trafficking
I don’t believe legalizing marijuana would put a dent in their plans, as they mainly use other drugs, and they have their own guns.
Also most criminally owned guns are bought through private owners, not through busineses.
my question got cut off
Kind of funny that if we wanted to we could shut down the border in a blink of an eye, with all the violence target at both Americans and Mexicans, especially since the scarcity of jobs at the moment and unemployment rising, it would be beneficial for Obama to make sure keep jobs available for his constituents,
anyways, what are your thoughts on the articles or my input?
We have the strongest military in the world, yet we can’t even secure our own borders. Its absolutely absurd. Not only are illegal immigrants swarming in and dragging down the economy, but its painfully obvious how easy it would be for malicious enemies, like terrorists, to enter through the exact same channel.
Even a bleeding heart liberal, who thinks we should let all immigrants in, should realize that securing our borders should be a top priority in the name of national security.

The Governor of TX is sending members of the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team) to the border at the expense of Texans because Obama and the Democrats are too busy paying off their constituents with stimulus money to actually fulfill the single biggest role of government: protecting the borders.

They have drugs and we want them, we have guns and they want them. It’s a bad combination.
If we legalized marijuana and closed gun purchasing loopholes, the drug war and subsequent border violence would be over tomorrow. The same way that Chicago gangland ended as soon as prohibition did.

We have just left a phase where we had no one of significance at the helm for now eight years. This is what has happened as a result. Now we leave this mess for a new president who has to fight just to give his own country affordable health care. Immigration reform will be sweeping and totally workable, will fix the problem and will happen next year. This year though, other things have to be tended too.
You can only do so much. We are in two wars and all.
Great article and questions though.

If Americans don’t demand it, they won’t supply it.
And that goes for both Illegals and drugs.
